Buried Into Myself - Handan Börüteçene
Istanbul Archaeology Museum
With the garment/sculpture she has constructed to illustrate Istanbul’s spectre, and the installation of souvenir photographs this garment has posed for, Handan Börüteçene urges her present-day fellow citizens to remember her in an exhibition running at the Istanbul Archaeology Museum between 3 December 2014 and 30 January 2015 entitled “Buried Into Myself”.
Börüteçene’s statement probes, ‘This city is an everlasting breath where human hearts have been beating non-stop for four hundred thousand years/ I’ll never understand why my fellow citizens run away from its memory!’ as she queries, by placing this installation in the heart of one of the oldest archaeology museums in the world, contemporary Istanbul residents’ methods of forging a relationship with history.
