Yapı Kredi Culture and Art
“THIS PLACE” an exhibition organized through the collaboration of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Yapı Kredi Culture Arts and Publishing, is at Yapı Kredi Kültür Sanat from September 21, 2021, till February 27, 2022.
“THIS PLACE” with a conceptual frame focusing on urban political ecology and presenting a selection of works from IMM City Museum Collection and Atatürk Library Archives alongside contemporary artworks, invites the visitors to contemplate on Istanbul.
Organized through the collaboration of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Yapı Kredi Culture Arts and Publishing, “THIS PLACE”, invites the audience to re-think Istanbul from the perspective of ecology by tracing historical and contemporary images. Approaching the city via the historical, cultural, and political transformation of its natural environment, the exhibition includes a selection from the IMM City Museum Collection and Atatürk Library Archives alongside contemporary works of art. “THIS PLACE” presents paintings, calligraphic work, maps, photographs, albums, newspapers, and magazine publications in the IMM archives and collection that reflect daily life and production culture of different periods focusing on the environment and nature in the context of the city of Istanbul. The works by contemporary artists in the exhibition tackle nature, urban ecology, and environmental justice themes through various perspectives.
The exhibition whose name is inspired by Füsun Onur’s artwork ‘This Place’ from 1993 presents works by Ahmet Ziya Akbulut, Ali Sami Boyar, Ali Taptık, Bedri Rahmi Eyüpoğlu, Burak Delier, Can Altay, Can Aytekin, Canan Tolon, Deniz Aktaş, Elif Naci, Erol Eti, Ezgi Tok, Ferruh Başağa, Feyhaman Duran, Füsun Onur, Gökçen Erkılıç & Ahmet Ünveren, İnci Eviner, Lara Ögel, Marina Papazyan, Mıgırdiç Civanyan, Muhtar Aykın, Mümtaz Yener, Nalan Yırtmaç, Nazmi Dayan, Nermin Er, Nilbar Güreş, Ömer Uluç, Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt, Selma Gürbüz, Şemsi Arel, Sena Başöz, Şevket Dağ, Sinem Dişli, Yasemin Özcan and Zeyno Pekünlü. “THIS PLACE” also showcases the work of many other individuals whose names are not always known and who produced, or contributed to the production of maps, postcards, various publications, documents, magazines and various items representing the city's production culture.
Curated by Kevser Güler, the Director of Exhibitions of Yapı Kredi Culture and Arts, the exhibition will be held between September 21, 2021, and February 27, 2022, on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Yapı Kredi Kültür Sanat at Galatasaray. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition as a publication of Yapı Kredi Publishing and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Publishing. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Yapı Kredi Culture Arts and Publishing will also be hosting lectures, panels, workshops, concerts, tours, and a special program for children on their social media platforms and at locations throughout the city.
